Exeter is one of the few remaining places in England which still holds the ancient right to elect a Bard or Bardic Chair and has continued to do so since the custom was revived in 2003. The bard, a poet, songwriter or wordsmith, must perform in front of an audience of their peers and win through in a secret ballot to be proclaimed the winner. For 2014, the people of Exeter elected Daniel Haynes as the city's new official Bard. He will represent Exeter in the ancient poetic tradition of the Bardic Chair for a year and a day.
